Contributions from individuals and foundations provide the bedrock of support that makes everything we do for the local community and theatre artists possible. Your support commissions new plays by major living playwrights; produces free play readings, new play developmental workshops, artist meet & greets, and Q&As; connects nationally-recognized artists with local high school students; puts published plays by major contemporary playwrights in our local schools; and so, so much more! Thank you for making a tax-deductible gift today!

YOUR GIFT ALLOWS US TO
Make all our programming FREE!
We want to ensure our work remains accessible to all. From the beginning, we’ve been committed to making our programming free. People sometimes ask us why. Our answer is simple: We believe art and culture belong to everyone and should be accessible to everyone—now more than ever.
Produce playwriting workshops at local schools!
During our 2024 season we connected Pulitzer Prize Finalists, a MacArthur “Genius,” and Obie Award Winners with students from Boise State University, The Community School, Wood River High School, and Silver Creek High School. Plus we offered a free monologue writing workshop for the entire Wood River Valley community!
Put plays by living playwrights into school libraries!
We’re giving local high schools published plays by notable playwrights in the Playwright’s Residency orbit—including Tony Award Winners, Pulitzer Winners and Finalists, MacArthur “Geniuses,” Obie Award Winners, Drama Desk Award Winners, and Guggenheim Fellows—to introduce the next generation to fresh, new writing for the theatre.
Bring nationally-recognized artists to town!
Help us bring more Pulitzer Prize Winners and Finalists, Tony Award nominees, Obie Award and Drama Desk Winners, and MacArthur “Geniuses” to the Wood River Valley to create new plays and be in conversation with you!
Add new plays to the American theatre!
Each year, we commission our Resident Playwright to write a new play, using their time in our community and at the Hemingway House to inspire them.
Make a creative home for playwrights!
In the wake of COVID, leading nonprofits that nurtured new plays shuttered, leaving playwrights with far fewer resources to create work. We’re making a creative home in Idaho’s Wood River Valley for these writers, actors, directors, and the local community to create new plays.
And so much more!

“The experience I had being in a reading of a play by a Pulitzer Prize-winner while being a high school student was phenomenal. The gift of working with incredibly talented local and national actors was an experience of a lifetime. I truly hope that in my acting pursuits I can have more experiences just like this one.”

“For me, part of the special sauce of the Wood River Valley has been a chance to experience big city cultural opportunities in the intimacy of this small town. The Playwright’s Residency supports writers’ creative processes and helps make our life here richer, deeper.”

“In a moment full of loss for new play incubation, when so many artistic homes are folding and shrinking, Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency offers a unique ray of optimism for playwrights. The opportunity to dedicate myself to the strange work of incubating a new play, a process that requires time, solitude, silence; but also attentive care, and communal rallying, is a godsend. Writing is a beautiful struggle, and without opportunities like this, many vital plays might be left to the wayside.”
